During the interaction with this week’s learning material about Personal Learning Network (PLN), one idea that appeared to be interesting is how machine learning algorithms used on online social platforms perceive an individual not just through his/her actions, but the socio-cultural environment and the patterns of other people. This has the potential to not only impact information privacy concerns, especially during personalization or targeted advertising, but also how we interact with social media to learn and network. The algorithm has the ability to guide or mislead us with its interpretation of our identity and thus influence our decision making. Therefore it is important to think critically when dealing with online material and it is worth wondering to what extent does the increased socialization and interconnection between individuals bring benefits to learning.
